What is happening in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and how can you help.
Tuesday 7th Oct
What is happening?
The DRC is facing one of the deadliest conflicts since World War II. Over 6 million civilians have lost their lives and millions more are displaced. Despite the abundance of resources in the DRC, the DRC remains one of the poorest countries in the world. Congolese people do not have access to adequate food, water, healthcare, education, and shelter. An estimated 27 million people are facing extreme food insecurity and violence. Civilians are forced to mine the country's resources in dangerous conditions, making the equivalent of $8.97 AUD. Yet, the world has turned a blind eye.
However, you can help change that.
How can you help?
Donate
In line with MUIS's advocacy efforts, this fundraiser aims to gather as much funds to provide essential aid, such as food, water, medical supplies and shelter, to the people of Congo. Urgent aid will be distributed to people who need it most, helping them receive life-saving assistance. By donating, you are directly impacting the lives of Congolese people, showing you see what is happening and refuse to do nothing.
Funds made directly through this page go directly to Red Cross Australia, who will help provide life-saving assistance on the ground.
Listen and Learn
Congolese people have endured unimaginable suffering, and their voices have been silenced for too long. So listen to their stories. Be patient with them and understand healing takes time. Be prepared to listen when they are ready to share their stories by providing spaces for Congolese people to feel safe and heard. Raise awareness about what's happening in the DRC by sharing these stories. Do your part to raise awareness, because, as we all know, stories will never be told if no one is listening.
Ultimately, what is happening in the DRC is not a new issue. The DRC’s history is a tragic story filled with exploitation, political instability and conflict. By being conscious of what is going on in Congo, we can promote change and a better future for the Congolese people. Stand in solidarity with Congo and let the world know you are watching their every move. As the saying goes: Be the change you want to see.
