🏃‍♂️ Running for Humanity: Berlin Marathon 2025 🌍

This year, I’m lacing up my shoes and running the Berlin Marathon—not just for the personal challenge, but for something far greater.

Like many of you, I’ve watched the news and felt a deep sense of helplessness. Families torn apart by conflict. Children growing up amidst chaos. Communities displaced with nowhere to go. It’s easy to feel powerless in the face of such suffering.

But I believe we can act. Even when the problems seem too big, our compassion can still make a difference.

That’s why I’m dedicating my run to the Australian Red Cross’s Act for Humanity appeal—an initiative that provides life-saving support to people caught in crises around the world. From emergency shelter and clean water to restoring family links and offering psychological support, their work is a lifeline for those who need it most.

💥 Every kilometre I run in Berlin will be powered by your generosity.
💥 Every dollar raised will help bring hope to someone who feels forgotten.

Whether it’s $5 or $50, your donation is a statement: that humanity matters, and that we won’t look away.

Thank you for standing with me—and with those who need us most.

And thank you so much for acting for humanity.

Race Report

Monday 22nd Sep
Ich bin ein Berlin-Marathonläufer!

**Berlin Marathon**
That chewed me up and spat me out (credit to the Wonderland Trail Run).

My lead up to BM25 wasn't ideal. I had a lower back seizure 10 days out from race day - and again a few days later - which completely clamped up my back and my hip flexors and gave me a mild groin strain for good measure.

Race day was forecasted to be a warm day.We received multiple messages about heat management from the organisers. And they weren't wrong. See pic below.

My start time was 9:45AM. The sun was out and temps were already in the early-20s.

I decided to have the same race  strategy as the Tokyo Marathon and see how long I could hold on to 5:05/km pace. As the kms ticked by, I knew this pace wouldn't last long. I gave myself a goal of maintaining the pace until at least the half-marathon (21.1kms) mark. From the 25km mark it became a war of attrition. I kept adjusting my goals; from achieving my 2nd best time, to 3rd best and so on. I cramped a bit, especially after running under the Brandenburg Gate! That was an incredible feeling 😍

Given the conditions, I aimed to keep my body temperature down. I stopped at every. drink. station. To drink but also pour water over my head, my arms, my limbs.

Some sections of the race were narrower than others which slowed us down and there was no other option but to walk at the drink stops given the sheer number of runners!

Knowing this was turning out to be the hardest marathon I was running, I did what I said I would do - enjoy the experience, despite the pain and discomfort.

I high-fived kids, and the "hit here to boost/power up" signs held by spectators; I stopped to see if a runner was ok just before the Brandenburg Gate as she was teetering to her left into the spectator barrier.

I was cramping badly in the last 500 metres but finished with the biggest smile on my face.

It wasn't an ideal day to run a marathon - it would not be my slowest mara by a huge margin, but it was the hardest out of the 10 road marathons I've run so far.

Official race pictures coming soon!

Please donate what you can to help me raise funds for Australian Red Cross's Act For Humanity campaign-a cause I've championed through running the Berlin Marathon!

Last minute niggles

Thursday 11th Sep
I didn't start the week well. My back, as it is prone to, seized up again, so the rest of the day was spent managing the incapacitation.
On Tuesday, I felt okay enough to go for a run; paradoxically, it actually helps the stiff back!
The 10km run was relatively pain-free but I felt a tightness in my left knee, which only got worse as the day progressed.
I was meant to do a track session yesterday, but decided to rest the knee and treat the soreness; anti-inflammation pills and ice/freezer pack on the knee.
So, I'm very pleased to have just returned from a good 10km hit out; it's a big relief, being just 10 days out from the big day!
