On 26 August 2026, a glacial lake outburst flood near the Tibet border triggered severe flash flooding across northern Nepal. Communities in Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts experienced widespread destruction as floodwaters damaged homes, roads, bridges and other critical infrastructure. Some communities remain cut off, making it difficult for responders to access affected areas and assess the full extent of humanitarian needs.
Reports indicate that at least 300 people have lost their lives, while hundreds remain missing including Australians, as the full scale of the disaster continues to emerge.
Nepal Red Cross Society has dispatched tarpaulins, blankets, sleeping mats and body bags, alongside first aid kits, stretchers and drinking water supplies where access permits. Immediate priorities include providing emergency shelter, safe drinking water, basic relief items, first aid and health support, and reaching isolated communities cut off by the floods.
