The Human Race

I'm fundraising for Australian Red Cross

Help me be a champion for humanity.

I've joined The Human Race, a fitness challenge supporting the work of Australian Red Cross.

This March, I'm showing how far I’ll go to raise crucial funds and help people and communities cope with disaster, conflict, isolation, and other crises.

No one should have to face a crisis alone. By supporting my efforts in The Human Race, you’ll help make sure Australian Red Cross teams can continue to be there for people and communities when it matters most.

So please support the movement of people helping people and make a tax-deductible donation today.

My Updates

Done

Friday 22nd Mar
Well, it has been challenging, in this fast paced and hectic world to set aside an hour or so to walk. Particularly when living with chronic pain. However, I have walked the 40km I set out to, and with a few days to go before the end of the month, I  may get a few more kms in.
It has been challenging to raise funds and I am grateful to those who did donate. The money raised will provide aid to people in need and that was the main goal.
Hopefully ARC can continue their work supporting those experiencing crisis in Australia and overseas.

Half way

Friday 15th Mar
I'm halfway through this challenge. I thought the walking would be hard given I've been experiencing some chronic pain issues. However, the fundraising has been the biggest challenge, and the most disheartening aspect of the challenge.
Everyone has been so encouraging and supportive of my efforts but there are so many causes, fundraising events, cost of living pressures, and feelings of hopelessness in the community that people do not want to donate.
Without the support of everyday people, it is hard to see how others can be supported in times of crisis. Maybe the answer isn't raising more money and challenges like this, but challenging people to build community through volunteering.
I know the new National Standards for Volunteering will help make a difference in this respect. Hopefully sooner rather than later.

First 10km done!

Saturday 2nd Mar
Walked the first 10km of this challenge today. It was slow but lovely to be out walking in nature.
It reminded me that I am very privileged to be able to take leisure time to walk when so many are experiencing hardship from war and conflict, homelessness, floods, fire, draught, cost of living pressures and health issues.
It really made me reflect on why I joined the human race, to help others in their time of need as best I can.

Tomorrow is the big day

Thursday 29th Feb
Tomorrow marks the start of my human race challenge. Due to some health complications I won't be able to walk 40km in one full day. So instead, I will walk 10km each Saturday in March.
By the end of the month I hope to have walked 50km, more if I can, to help raise funds for Red Cross.
So, if you can donate $5 to help spur me on, I would appreciate it. So would all the people Australian Red Cross will help with those vital funds raised.
Thank you for your support.

Kick starting training

Wednesday 3rd Jan
Today, the sun was out and rain had stopped for the first time in a week. It was such a lovely morning I thought it would be a good  day to start training for the 40km walk in March.
I have decided to walk the 40km all in one day trekking from the putter suburbs of BCC to Brisbane CBD and back (20.5km each way).
So today I spent an hour walking the bike trail sussing out the route I could take. It was nice to be out in nature.

A new year but disasters continue

Tuesday 2nd Jan
Another year has started with devastating natural disasters in Australia and wars rage on overseas. I felt powerless to do anything and then I remembered I could do something. A small something is still something. This year I am recommitted to be a good human and spread as much humanity and kindness as I can. I will be walking 40km this March as part of the human race but I will also be contributing in other ways. Stay tuned to find out how.
